anyone read the interview with Errol Willis last week?.
pretty good hearing that from someone coming out of the under19s class, sounds a little cocky but it really sounds like he wants it - he was real good in the U19s class this year, only noticed a couple of mistakes here and there but over all he was really strong - i dont think that means he is automatically at the front of the pro lites pack next year, i think he has about 2 seconds a lap to make up, going off lap times at couple of the races in the 2011 season, which is not impossible to get up there..
i think with some extra competition and the good starts he is known for he will be up there, i wouldnt think that he will win straight away but i think he will be top 5 at the very least...
i like his attitude, i know it would probably rub some of the other racers the wrong way, but who cares he is there to try win races isnt he. he doesnt seem to be too scared to rub/race close either - supercross at Melbourne this year with Joey was awesome to watch.
so it got me thinking when was the last time we had a rookie champion in Australia?. anyone know when and who?

It's good to hear is is confident but I think he should have maybe, kept the title talk to himself until he had a race or 2 under his belt. Yes his laptimes have been close but still a couple of seconds (sometimes 5)off at most rounds. With the Pro Lite Guys riding a rougher track with more competition. I think a championship might be a little over ambitious.
I think Anthony Gobert won the 125 AusMX title in 1991 or 1992 as a rookie. Maybe it was his second year in the 125 class. Also I think Kim Ashkenazi wont 125-250-500 Titles in 1992 or 1993 on Suzuki's before signing with Dacka. Joel Elliot won the 1994 125 MX title but I think it was his 2nd year as a pro because I still have posters of him on a 1993 KX250 doing heal clickers.

I know the interview definitely got a few of the Lites guys talking, but at the end of the day I think we all agree it's good for the sport. I know it's going to be super tough for him next year to win, but confidence is a huge bonus to have on your side and there's no doubt he has plenty of that.
Yeah, my brother was rookie SX champion in 1991 on the 125 and won the following year on the 250. I think TC was a rookie champion in 125 SX as well from memory when he was riding a Honda in 1996. Reedy was 250 SX champion pretty quick in 1999, but don't remember if he was a rookie or not. I didn't follow the outdoors as closely, but I remember Ashkenazi was strong at a young age.

I've been sponsoring Errol for a long time and he is one of these kids that can seem to find speed. So if anyone can make the jump to Pro Lites and beyond he definately has the foundations to do so. Another kid I help out Jarrad Davis is very similar.
Errol is cocky, no doubt. Although I have not found him to be this way away from the track and the media. It will rub his competitors up the wrong way and could quite possibly put a target on his back for 2012 when he plays with the big boys. It could also do the opposite and get under their skin. We all know what mental fortitude means at the top level of motocross racing. If a racer is not confident, he's going from hero to zero in a matter of laps.
Getting back to Streeters' original point. Personally I think he can podium in 2012, but as for winning that championship in his first year. Alot of things have to go your way in alot of races and without the racecraft and experience that some of the more seasoned pro lites competitors have, Errol may find it difficult to achieve that Rookie Title. I wish him luck.

yeah i dont find Errol cocky away from the track, opposite really, real good way to be though at the race track.. reminds me a lot of Mosig when he was racing injuniors, i guess Errol has had it a little easier with the U19s series (from memory Kade was 16 or 17 in seniors?) - so i think that will help a little with his mind/head... - (good to see kade starting to get back that swagger he had when he was a junior though! really looks good in the last year or so)

I think he'll be doing good to top 5 in the championship in his first year, Im not taking anything away from him but its a big jump. I think Josh Cachia will be the one to look out for.

Errol should do well in the lites because he has already worked out what possibly is the hardest part of racing, how to win. He has the concistancy, trains and looks like he has the workman like attitude that a true pro needs. This is the side of things that comes the hardest to most young pros. Most prospects start with speed and then need to build the right attitude , program and mental strength to pull it off.
I feel confident that Errol will find the speed and be a top 5 or 6 guy pretty early on in his lights season and with a bit of luck and hard work can move towards the top three.
Hats of to John Tisdale, Woodsy and the Race-Line Suzuki for landing the Under 19's championship and sticking by Errol for the lights in 2012!
