Rockstar Motul Suzuki twin brothers Jake and Matt Moss made it an all-Moss family affair with victory in both the Open and Lites categories at Sydney’s sixth round of the Monster Energy Super X, Australasian Supercross Championship, tonight.

In a dominant night for the Newcastle-based Suzuki team, the Moss brothers handed the team a perfect score for the series’ penultimate round while fellow team rider Lawson Bopping handed them second overall in a dream night for the team.

Jake took out a drama-filled Open final whilst Matt was impressive all night for a dominant win in the Lites.

The Quad challenge format featured in the Open class with each race having a different winner.

Series leader Monster Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Josh Hansen claimed the first of the four six-lap races in a dominant performance leading Scottish KRT teammate Billy Mackenzie in his first ever Super X race in second and Jay Marmont (CDR Rockstar Yamaha) third.

In the second moto Dan McCoy (Hart and Huntington Coastal KTM) and Marmont were neck and neck for the whole race after Hansen got stuck back in the pack at the start.

McCoy managed to hold on for the win with Marmont second and Daniel Reardon (Cougar Bourbon Honda Racing) in third.

Hansen finished eighth with a bent gear shift-lever that forced him to race in one gear for the entire race.

Mackenzie took the third holeshot of the night with Hansen close behind and Jake Moss third. The two Kawasaki riders battled for the lead in the final lap, but the Scot held off Hansen for the win. Moss held on for third.

Mackenzie claimed the final holeshot of the night and Hansen once again got stuck back in the pack. Mackenzie, Marmont and Moss were all within a bike length of one another up front for most of the race, until Marmont went down in the sand section.

On the same lap Mackenzie went off the side of the track allowing Moss to pass. Mackenzie and Marmont swapped second and third places numerous times throughout the race, but it was Moss who grabbed the win with Mackenzie second and Marmont third.

Moss was first overall on a count back with Mackenzie second and Marmont third.

“It was so awesome to get the win tonight especially with Matt winning too,” Jake said. “I was riding really tight all night, but everything just came together for me in the final.”

Moss’ victory marked the first Australian win of the season, and also the first round that hasn’t featured an American rider on the podium.

However, Scottish ex-Motocross GP winner Mackenzie surprised even himself with his debut Super X performance after coming off collarbone surgery, crediting his lightning starts for the result before dedicating it to injured Queenslander Harley Quinlan.

“I am really happy with my result tonight and I did so much better than I ever could have expected,” Mackenzie said. “I have been training supercross for a month, but the last couple of weeks have been tough after the accident with Harley Quinlan.

“I was with him when it happened so riding has been hard. I had some really good starts tonight which were really important on this track because it was hard to pass.”

Marmont came close to victory for the round, however his fall cost him in moto four.

“It’s always good to be on the podium, but I am disappointed I went down in the sand in the last race,” the Wollongong favourite said. “I was leading overall before that and in a good position for the win, but at least I finished ahead of Hansen.

“Mossy has been gaining points on me the last couple of rounds so I really need some wins in Brisbane.”

The unforgiving Survival format featured in the Lites final and the final five lap race of five riders was down to Matt Moss, Josh Cachia (Coastal KTM), Bopping, Cody Mackie (Kawasaki Racing Team) and title leader PJ Larsen (JDR Motorex KTM).

Moss was able to score the victory ahead of teammate Bopping after a dominant display, while Cachia scored his first ever Super X podium in third ahead of Mackie.

Meanwhile, Larsen was ruled out after a clash with Mackie early in the race due to front wheel damage.

“Tough luck for PJ but that’s racing,” Moss beamed from the Lites podium, directly before the Open main event. “I’d like to thank my whole family for coming here and my brother’s on the line for the Open main event, so kick butt buddy!”

The championship lead has now been passed back to Moss, with Larsen only five points behind going into the final round in Brisbane next weekend.

Young gun Dylan Long made it four wins from four in the Michelin Development Series with Jarrad Davis second and Luke Clout third.

The final round of the series will be held at QSAC stadium in Brisbane next Saturday, 4 December.
