As the topic says, Why not. I have only ever been there once, for a function, so have no idea what the track itself is like. They pushbike race there, and car race, why not bikes??

I've never seen the place to be honest.
I would say its that big wall that lines the outside of Turn Four from what I can see in this YouTube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cezz08tVV24
It is a shame though, considering it's so close to Melbourne.

I wouldn't have thought that's too different from Simmonds Plains or Winton though ??

I guess you are right there. Without seeing the speed or angle of the turn, I'm not really sure. Never been to the place!

The reason is, as you crest the rise on the back straight, bikes get airborne..... they used to have a left turn, crossing of the horse track, and then a little right turn to take the crest out of the picture. But the horsey people relaid their track, and removed the bike section, and that was the end of that. If you watch the cars, they do get some air under them on that crest, and our bikes would be "flying" with no control into that Dandenong road corner.
Yeah, air fence could solve problems, but it was a LOT of work in Tassie, worse in the rain.

That's what I was thinking Kris. If it's just a case of air fence then I don't see what's stopping them?A race that close to Melbourne cbd would be MASSIVE for crowd numbers I reckon.

And Honda ran ride days there up until last year i think, so it can't be that bad. They wouldn't have had any air fence either....

or this

Or lastly this

As mentioned the walls are way too close for it to be safe for Bikes to race there.

Looks like all the same video??? But yeah, great reason why the bikes aren't there!

Mathsman is pretty much on the money. Ive been to sandown and that crest would cause havoc, Some cars get airborne over there and for bike its just not safe at all. Not to mention the amount of walls and near no run off room on some corners as others have mentioned

Still, it would be bloody awesome to see the superbikes flick from side to side through the esses. I'd pay to see that as would many others. probably will never happen, though, but dreams are free, right?

Back when they used the older infield section of the track a few riders "accidentally" ran down the hill down to Dandy Rd and certainly looked good doing it.

The thread above shows Brookesy getting airborne at Caldwell Park.
This makes Sandown look like a great track

If you search "Caldwell Park BSB" on you tube you can view loads of video footage of the riders jumping the crest.
Brookesy is the best in my opinion.

How much fun would that be , remember when Leon Haslam made a mistake right on that cadwell park jump and went down hard smashing his leg !!! I am very interested to ride sandown now all this talk about it has made it sound fun, I no walls are close, but what's the difference check winton out properly! Turn 11 there is a square edged wall and turn 1 through 2 have a massive wall , tassie at the test I ran wide out of turn 3 under the bridge and brushed the wall as my tyre hit the dirt, then at the hair pin I have marks all over my suit where you were trying to use all the track and brush that wall !!! If we as racers were worried about these things we would all restrict ourselvs to Phillip island !

Kris, the dissappointing thing from the weekend in Tassie was, you didn't get the same TV time as P.I.; you didn't destroy any circuit signage at all!!!
The big thing that puts a FULL STOP to Sandown is the word "Track Licence". M.A. consider your "safety" before your spectacular actions!!!
any way. :+{)

Yeah I tend to agree with you there Kris (keeping in mind I have only seen youtube footage of the track), but yeah, Winton = close walls, bikes still race there, EC you have a wall at T2, Tassie, wall as you have said, hell even PI as we all saw with Vermeulen has a wall that is not outside the range of being hit hard.Lets hope the re-development of Calder goes ahead and we have a suitable track close to town to draw a massive crowd to.

ooh take that McLaren !! haha bam .....
Mark it would be awesome if we had another cool track that was close its a bit of a bummer. But hey I suppose is it not that easy, they obvioulsly have to do a whole bunch of things to our current "unsafe" circuits we are not to ride on at this point in time..

I think there's the occasional ride day at Sandown if you really want to ride it but don't ask me who r when cos I don't know.

Sandown is a fun track to ride... but a full-scale Superbike event there? No, I think it is a little dodgy.
I have done demo laps there in the past, and the Dandy Road corner is friggen frightening.
Even when I cut a few laps in a Carrera Cup Porsche a few years ago.... still makes you hesitate.
It would require a bit of work to make it suitable for bikes, but I agree that the location would make it a prime attraction.

Josh Waters and Glenn Allerton cut demo laps at Sandown last year for the L&H500 first 2+4 event on the 2000's. Ask them!
