I found this story pretty interesting as V8 Supercars team owner and driver Paul Morris questioned the value of television for national level racing: http://www.speedcafe.com.au/2010/08/09/questions-on-value-of-tv-for-national-racing/

We've heard some say that TV is everything for Aussie bike racing, while others have dismissed its worth.

For Super X I think it's an exceptional advantage since it's live in the prime time on Saturday nights, but even I get a little bored watching ASBK, FX or the MX Nationals when they are played a few weeks after the events (granted because I'm usually at the races).

What do you guys think?

For competitors, does television have a huge impact when sourcing sponsors.

From a fans' point of view, do you take notice of rider sponsors or decals on the bikes when watching (can you even see them)?

MotoOnline.com.au finally has signatures! Contact me if you have any troubles with the site.

Really to weigh this up correctly we need to know what level of cost reduction there would be to teams. The other point the Dude was making is that no TV is better for club level racing due to cost.

From an ASBK point of view, the goal should be that the TV Networks are bidding for the right to broadcast ASBK, not that we are paying for the spot.

It seems to me TV is great leverage when negotiation with potential sponsors.

As for seeing sponsorship on bikes, they need to make the faring's bigger!!!!!!

For the bikes the TV value is in the interviews and stories on the teams, rider, transporters etc, where the sponors logos and names are more prominent. We don't have a big door or bonnet to put a name on unfortunately.
So while it's great to watch the racing, we need to do more stories, profiles etc I think.

I definately agree.
Watching the way some of the events on Speedweek are presented is quite enlightening compared to the FX coverage, where you mainly get the podium getters trying to rattle off as many sponsors names as possible in a short time.

Whilst I like watching the specific races, I also like the magazine style program that Gary Wilmington's IRS series gets, where they get a decent chat with some of the competitors, interspersed with shots of racing action.

It's something I plan on bringing up with Terry O'Neil next time I get to chat with him.

I reckon it all depends on what bang you get for your buck.Without question it raises the profile of the sport,its teams sponsors and riders.Done correctly it should bring a larger fan base to the sport,which should in turn give some return to sponsors etc.I guess it depends on what sort of coverage the races get.The sponsors signage on the bikes is not really visible on telly.I think sponsors get more value for money when the commentators consistently men.tion them on the telecasts. I could not agree more with TDP, stories,interviews,rider/team profiles,behind the scenes stuff is what fans want to see more of.It also gives much more scope for sponsors to do their thing.I think the average fan out theredoesn,t really take alot of notice of sponsors but he sure does know what manufacturer won the race.So by this reasoning more tv shold have some bearing on bike sales in the long term.

In my opinion, it is the same old crap..... Every National series that you see advertised has the pilot rattling off sponsors etc...
Personally, I think the media would do a better job if it created an identity for the rider/driver....
Call me crazy, but I believe that the public relate more to an identity... more than a robot.
Take MotoGP for example..... who wants to watch Pedrosa dribble about Repsol, when you can listen to Edwards talk about shooting guns, rubbing elbows and having fun.... ????

Now, have a think for a second..... every company wants to sell their product, and that is the only reason why the sponsor a team/rider....

Rockstar = Ricky Carmichael
Repsol = Mick Doohan
Marlboro (Jeez I cant spell tonight) Schuey and Casey
Castrol = (For any die hard bike fan here..... Castrol Honda equals Colin V Troy @ Imola)

See TV doesnt work @krusty74 Ricky Carmichael is sponsored by Monster both when he was at Suzuki and now in nascar.

Jokes aside krusty74 is right people relate to the personallity. Do we think Rossi would be half a popular as he is today with out the 125 & 250 Victory celebrations???? At some point nearly everyone in the MotoGP class has looked up to this guy.

But personallity wont help boring racing. It also seems as like there is a complete lack of awarness about domestic road racing. With WSBK being taken off free to air TV lots of people havent realised that ASBK is a feeder to this system. Even getting a small news slot with weekend results will help lift the profile. At the moment if your not looking for who won the weekened races you wont find out.

You beat me to it Ashman about RC and Monster.

When RC raced for Suzuki the team was Makita Suzuki. After he retired they took on Rockstar and became Rockstar Makita Suzuki ;)

I just finished watching the news where they were reporting on the Brisbane Roar vs North QLD soccer match. It drew less than 1000 spectators!!! What a joke. Yet this match got about 30 or more seconds of press during the sports section of the news. The mind boggles as to why...

@nelso_19 excatley right about the a league soccer. They get a spot on the prime time late night news aswell as updates. I think rather than fight for full events to be televised. Just getting the ASBK & the MX Nationals to be mentioned duringthe sports report on Saturday & Sunday evening news before and after the events. I think that would help raise the awareness of our sports.
