Australia’s scheduled round of the 2011 Motocross Grand Prix World Championship has been dropped from next year’s calendar, according to a press release from series organiser Youthstream this week.

It was earlier announced on the provisional calendar that Broadford would be hosting the opening round of next year’s MX1 and MX2 GP series in Victoria, however news on the event has stalled in recent weeks and confirmation that it’s been cancelled has now arrived.

In an update from Youthstream this week, it has been revealed that just two rounds of the world championship will be contested outside of Europe next year, with the bad news for Australian fans being that the release noted the United States and Brazil as those international events.

“The schedule for 2011 will feature two overseas events (USA and Brazil),” the statement from Youthstream said. “In 2012 there will be three and in 2013 there will be four overseas events. Additional overseas countries will be Japan and Australia – and the FIM Motocross World Championship will start and finish in Europe.”

It’s uncertain whether Australia will be featured in the 2012 or 2013 running of the championship, however the news comes as a massive blow – not entirely unexpected – to the sport in Australia as many of the nation’s top domestic stars looked forward to taking on the world’s best on home soil.
