Okay guys, we are considering running a couple of MotoOnline.com.au Tipping Competitions for 2010.
Firstly, what series would we like it to be for? I'd like to focus on Australian stuff for now, whether it be in ASBK, MX Nationals or Super X - or all three if you guys like. Plus we could do one off races like the 6 Hour, MX of Nations or something for a bit of fun.
It'll be pretty small at first I'd say, but I'd like the tipping comps to go hand in hand with our new community as an added feature for the new year and then continue to grow as the site gets busier, potentially adding prizes etc.
Since there are quite a few tipping comps out there that have a few different theories on how they should work on forums, I personally like the following set-up that is similar to the comp run on Jamie Whincup's website, but I'm open to suggestions. It rewards tipsters who can choose multiple positions in the top 10, rather than just max points for those who can win - the more positions you get correct then the higher your score will be from each round.
You will have to name the fastest qualifier as well as the OVERALL round positions for 1-10 positions - with a point being awarded for every correct tip as followed:
10 correct names in the correct position as well as pole position for the round - 11 points
10 correct names in the correct position - 10 points
9 correct names in the correct position - 9 points
8 correct names in the correct position - 8 points
7 correct names in the correct position - 7 points
6 correct names in the correct position - 6 points
5 correct names in the correct position - 5 points
4 correct names in the correct position - 4 points
3 correct names in the correct position - 3 points
2 correct names in the correct position - 2 points
1 correct names in the correct position - 1 point
They also award points on the Whincup site if you guess the rider to finish in the top 10, but doesn't finish in the position you thought. In this case you will get half (0.5) points.
For your entry to be eligible to enter the comps you must name the result you think your riders will score, followed by their full names and bike number, with an example as follows in no particular order (this makes it easier and more consistent when tallying results):
ASBK Phillip Island Round 1, February 2010
1st - Josh Waters - #1
2nd - Glenn Allerton - #14
3rd - Wayne Maxwell - #47
4th - Shannon Johnson - #42
5th - Jamie Stauffer - #27
6th - Dan Stauffer - #26
7th - Craig Coxhell - #5
8th - Shawn Giles - #19
9th - Robbie Bugden - #6
10th - Grant Hay - #63
Another option is to just do the top five, but do both main classes (Superbike and Supersport at the ASBK events or Pro Open and Pro Lites at MX/SX events), which may work out better overall! What we would do in this case is tally up the two separate classes and then combine the overall scores to determine our overall round winners.
Let me know what you guys think.
Thanks,
AG

I think I like the option of scoring the top five for both the leading classes in whatever series it is that we are tipping. The aim of the game is to keep users interested through the course of the season, as well as making the point tallies simple enough to add up quickly following each round (hey, I'm a writer, always sucked at maths lol).
Following the initial feedback, what I would like to do is use a similar structure to the one above, but if you do happen to tip the round winner then you get three points instead of one just so you get a greater reward for tipping the winner. From that point we can tally up both classes quite easily, and then combine the scores to determine the overall winner.
Now, instead of using the points that we accumulated in our tipping for the actual championship points, I'd like to make it so the user who wins the tipping round overall gets 25 points, second gets 22, third 20, fourth 18, fifth 16, all the way down to one point for 20th. If your out of the top 20 then you get zero for the round.
This is pretty much like they do in Super X when they have the 'Triple Challenge' etc, accumulate points in the races scored on the night, but in the end they only get 25 for winning overall and so on so the championship race stays nice and tight throughout the series.
Sound okay? Thanks for the input so far! For those who are confused at this point, don't worry, I'll post an official rules update once we discuss some things and get it all sorted.

Any more input for this one guys??? Will be finalising details shortly and posting up the rules. Final piece of information that I thought of was that the tipping for all events will close at midnight the night before the first practice session of the weekend. Tell your mates!

hey pen, seriously on that note - the grid girls most of the asbk teams use from what i have seen are RUBBISH!!!
on the other hand the woodstock girls were great in 2009 and so were the iveco girls at the motoGP, Bone was chattin up all the birds down there. they dig the mullet!
it was my pleasure to let them get a photo with the bone. they love it!
so on my first point, i am hoping to see a turnaround this year in grid candy from the teams. if i don;t see better ones, the bone might be forced to take action and create an auditioning panel with me, me bro and me mate jacko. we'll rate em and send em on there merry way.

Well,....I would go onto the grid in a mankini and microphone, interview all of the girls, consult with my panel of experts and pretty much run a grid girl comp.
Lift the standards here I think Bone

maybe Motoonline can have a rate grid girls thing like some of the other motorsport websites do??
that would be a massive favourite. no aussie moto websites do anything like that (that i know of) and i think its a shame!

I'll be finalising the tipping early next month in time for ASBK round one at the Island. Any last suggestions or are we happy as is? For 2010 we will have tipping comps for ASBK, MX Nationals and Super X in Australia. Thanks, AG.

Tipping isn't open just yet mate, we'll have a new thread for each round lol. But, since you've jumped the start I might just lock you in so you can't change them after this upcoming test!
Allerton eighth??? Giles 11th??? Haha Gee whiz. That list just shows how deep the field is in 2010 despite any off-track controversy that's been happening.

Hello Blokes,
I know my pics seem a bit strange, but stop and think about it,....as far fetched as my pics seem, it could well be a reality.
Truth is any of those top 12 riders could win on the right day and machine.
Who knows what will happen and if my pics are wrong, then so be it, but wouldn't it be great if the field is as unpredictable as this?
I totally agree with you Ali G, the list of riders shows great depth.

We'll be opening the tipping comp for the opening ASBK round on Tuesday, 23 February and it will feature the full finalised rule set. Tell all your friends and get them on here, the more people the better! And we encourage current racers to come on and vote for themselves too!

Ok Ali G,
Here is my updated pick list for the WSBK round of the ASBK.
I have made some minor changes as Cocko doesn't appear to be riding this year and McMartin is in and he can ride a bike thats for sure.
1 Jamie Stauffer (Ducati)
2 Wayne Maxwell (Honda)
3 Josh Waters (Suzuki)
4 Shannon Johnson (KTM)
5 Glenn Allerton (Honda)
6 Dan Stauffer (Aprilia)
7Jordan Burgess (Ducati)
8 Shawn Giles (Suzuki)
9 Robert Bugden (Suzuki)
10 Kris McLaren (Honda)
11 Craig McMartin (Ducati)
Truth is, I don't know who will be in the top ten, this is such a guess, but I do think Jamie will win.
